Long Road Run

The kit for long road shit. Saturday 16–22 milers, marathon-block weekends, and the bike-path hours where fuel, chafe, and GPS matter more than a lunch loop.

ForHalf–marathon block
Day band~$500–$1,400

This is the closet for pavement that goes long — Indian Bend Wash loops stacked into twenty, Chicago lakefront out-and-backs, the mid-block long run where gels, electrolytes, and a watch with maps earn their keep. Not a 45-minute neighborhood shakeout. Not a Flagstaff hill half.

Every product below has a buy link, a real product photo, and a sourced quote or use story from reviews and marathon coverage. Practice drinking and taking gels at the pace you intend to race.

Note.

Product photos match the linked items. Fuel, anti-chafe, and sunscreen aren’t medical advice. Check the retailer for current pricing before you buy.
Runner’s World · Advanced Marathoning

Here’s How Fast Marathoners Should Do Their Long Runs

“Doing most of your long runs at 10 to 20 percent slower per mile than your goal marathon race pace.”

Pete Pfitzinger, M.S., and Scott Douglas — Runner’s World, adapted from Advanced Marathoning, 4th edition

Pfitzinger and Douglas put the long run at the center of a time-goal marathon block: most long days stay 10–20% slower than goal marathon pace (roughly 75–83% max heart rate), so you rehearse posture and muscle patterns without leaving the race on the training loop. Go much slower and you miss specificity; go too fast and you trash the week’s other sessions.

Their second move: sprinkle a few long runs that finish with 8–14 miles at goal marathon pace across a 12–18 week build, spaced about three weeks apart, last one five to six weeks before race day — and use those days to practice drinking and gels at race pace on road, not endless track laps.

Read on Runner’s World
From the feature

Warm the first miles easy, settle into the intensity window by mile five, and finish the last five closer to 10% slower than goal pace. Match terrain to your race — pancake courses like Chicago still tax legs that never change pattern. Wear race shoes for at least one ~15-mile marathon-pace rehearsal.

Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt

“The best option for a green, long-distance, off-road run in Scottsdale… more than 24 grade-separated crossings.”

Great Runs — Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt

Scottsdale’s paved greenbelt — parks, lakes, golf-course edges, and grade-separated crossings so a long run doesn’t die at every arterial. Great Runs maps about 13.5 miles through the heart of Scottsdale, mostly lit. Stack north–south for half-marathon and twenty-mile volume; connect Arizona Canal or Papago when you want more desert-metro pavement.

Chicago Lakefront Trail

“The 18-mile Lakefront Trail is one of the most spectacular urban runs in the country.”

Great Runs — Chicago Lakefront Trail · Chi.Run lakefront guide

Separated pedestrian and bike paths along Lake Michigan — flat, continuous, and built for marathon-block volume. Chi.Run frames it as the default long-run and tempo office: Montrose / North Avenue starts, Museum Campus skyline, and enough uninterrupted asphalt to rehearse race-pace segments without stoplights. Carry water south of the Loop when fountains are seasonal.

Garmin Forerunner 965

~$599 · Buy at Garmin

1.4″ always-on AMOLED, titanium bezel, full maps, multiband GNSS / SatIQ, Training Readiness, wrist running dynamics + power, music. Official GPS-only up to ~31 hours — marathon-block computer, not a lunch-loop toy. Photographed: Forerunner 965 as linked.

“In many ways, the Forerunner 965 is a safe play for Garmin… The GPS accuracy continues to be (easily) industry-leading, especially in the battery-friendly SatIQ mode.”

DC Rainmaker — Garmin Forerunner 965 in-depth review

Press + field: DC Rainmaker’s hands-on frames FR965 as the AMOLED Forerunner with maps — ~31h GPS / ~23d smartwatch official, SatIQ that scales multiband when the city canyon needs it. Short Road keeps the 265; this page steps up to maps and marathon battery for 16–22 milers and race-weekend LiveTrack.

Christopher Ward C60 Trident Pro 300

~$1,095 · C60-42ADA31S0KK1-HK · Buy at Christopher Ward

42mm British dive tool — Sellita SW200-1 automatic, unidirectional ceramic bezel, 300m water resistance, exhibition caseback. Photographed on CW’s black Cordura® / rubber hybrid strap (22mm quick-release): the pavement move when a steel bracelet traps sweat.

“In a world where GPS-enabled electronic devices pose an operational security risk, analog watches are even used for their original purpose: To tell time.”

Hodinkee — “A Former CIA Case Officer Reveals The Surprising Connection Between Watches and Espionage” (Watches of Espionage)

Why hybrid rubber on long road: CW’s own Cordura®-and-rubber hybrid is waterproof, quick-release, and non-metal — locked road-athletics strap pattern. On harder days, Barton Bands, Archer, or Watches of Espionage rubber / NATO options are the aftermarket extreme-run swap; leave the bracelet in the drawer. Product story from Christopher Ward: ultra-wearable Trident, ceramic bezel click, Swiss automatic, 300m. Field footnote — Watches of Espionage has spotted Gen. Austin Scott Miller in a C60 Trident (GMT 600) in Afghanistan and Mogadishu; that is published watch-spotting on a related Trident, not a claim that this Pro 300 SKU was issued. Garmin for GPS. C60 for time-only presence.

ASICS Superblast 2 road running shoe

01 · Shoe · showcase

ASICS Superblast 2

Plateless super trainer — FF Blast+ Eco / FF Turbo+ stack, engineered woven upper, ASICSGrip outsole. The long-road daily that can also cover tempo and race day for most midpack marathoners. Photographed: Superblast 2, not a Novablast stand-in.

“If I was forced to whittle my collection down to just the one pair, the Asics Superblast would be a serious contender… one of the best running shoes of all time.”

Runner’s World UK — Asics Superblast 2 review

Press + use: RW UK calls v2 a structured-upper, grippier-outsole refresh that keeps the bouncy versatile ride — easy, long, tempo, and race day. RunRepeat frames it as the Swiss-army trainer and “ideal for tackling long runs at slower and faster paces.” Distinct from Arahi 8 / Clifton 9 / Stinson 7 / Speedgoat 6 already live elsewhere.

FlipBelt Classic running belt

02 · Carry

FlipBelt Classic

Soft tubular belt — phone, keys, gels, Body Glide stick. The long-road alternative to a vest when you’re stacking bike-path miles.

“I will never run another marathon without the FlipBelt.”

Runner’s World — NYC Marathon FlipBelt first-use account

Use stories: RW’s NYC account carried through five boroughs without slide. The Strategist: multi-year weekly use with zero bounce; first-marathon kits with bottle + gels + phone. For a 16–22 miler you need secure carry, not bounce theater.

Nathan SpeedDraw 2.0 22oz handheld

03 · Handheld

Nathan SpeedDraw 2.0 22oz

22oz handheld with soft-flask feel and a secure strap. Mix Skratch or Tailwind for summer long days when fountains are unreliable.

Runner’s World’s SpeedDraw family write-up called the line an “all-in-one handheld.” The bottle on this page is SpeedDraw 2.0 22oz.

Runner’s World — Nathan handheld water bottles

Long-road practice: Carry what you’ll race with. A 22oz handheld plus soft flask in the belt covers Phoenix heat and Chicago south stretches where water is sparse.

04 · Soft flask

Salomon Soft Flask 500ml

500ml soft flask — collapses as you drink, slips into FlipBelt or handheld sleeve. Exact Soft Flask photo as linked.

Road and trail packing lists keep Salomon soft flasks as the default “no-bounce bottle” when a hard bottle fights your hip flex.

Common race-kit practice · Salomon Soft Flask product line

Long-road use: Pair with SpeedDraw for two-bottle long days, or stash one flask of mix and one of water when you’re rehearsing marathon aid-station rhythm.

Maurten Gel 100

05 · Fuel

Maurten Gel 100

Hydrogel carb gel — the marathon-block staple when you want high carbs without gut roulette. Photographed: Gel 100.

Tom’s Guide: Maurten gels/drinks “have been used by every World Marathon Major winner since 2017, and to set every new marathon world record since 2018.”

Tom’s Guide — Maurten fuel coverage

Elite use (not our win): Published World Major / world-record fueling receipts. For a long road day you need a practiced gel schedule — not a brand new flavor at mile 18.

Tailwind Endurance Fuel

06 · Drink mix

Tailwind Endurance Fuel

All-in-one carb + electrolyte drink mix — dissolve in the Soft Flask or SpeedDraw when you want calories without another gel texture.

Ultrarunning and marathon packing culture treats Tailwind as the “drink your calories” option when gel fatigue hits mid-block.

Tailwind Endurance Fuel product line · long-run packing practice

Long-road use: Alternate flask of Tailwind with water + Maurten gels so gut and palate both get a rotation across 16–22 miles.

Skratch Labs Hydration Sport Mix

07 · Electrolytes

Skratch Labs Hydration Sport Mix

Real-fruit hydration mix — lower sweetness than candy-electrolyte tabs, built for sweaty long sessions.

Road Trail Run and dietitian reviews land Skratch in the marathon-training hydration lane — pair with gels when the day goes long.

Road Trail Run · Metrics and Miles dietitian notes

Desert-metro note: Phoenix-metro long days dehydrate faster than thirst admits — mix Skratch early, don’t wait for the headache.

SaltStick Fastchews

08 · Salt

SaltStick Fastchews

Chewable electrolytes — pocket a sleeve for hot long runs when sweat rate outruns your drink mix.

Marathon and ultra packing lists keep Fastchews as the mid-run salt top-up that doesn’t require another bottle.

SaltStick Fastchews · race-kit practice

Field practice: Rehearse salt the same way you rehearse gels — on a long training day, not first time at the expo.

Body Glide Original pocket size

09 · Chafe

Body Glide Original (pocket)

Anti-chafe stick that fits the FlipBelt — nipples, thighs, sports-bra lines before the long day.

Runner’s World anti-chafe roundups keep Original in the “effective, easy to find, non-greasy” lane, with a reapply note on very long days.

Runner’s World — anti-chafe gear coverage

Long-road practice: Swipe before you leave; pocket the stick for mile 12 when salt starts cutting. Medical products ≠ medical advice.

13 · Cap

Ciele GOCap Athletics

COOLwick, UPF-minded run cap — washable, packable, the desert-metro sun lid for Town Lake hours.

Doctors of Running’s Ciele system review lands on COOLwick performance and UPF ~40 washable construction across the Athletics caps.

Doctors of Running — Ciele caps

Shady Rays X Series · Black Smoke Polarized

Transparent gloss smoke wrap-around sport frame with polarized grey lenses — same X Series grip story as short trail, different colorway for long pavement glare.

“Aside from the fact that the Shady Rays X-Series Sunglasses look AMAZING they are a top notch pair of sunglasses for any type of athlete. They are super comfortable, fit well on your ears with hats and headphones…”

The Valley Isle Runner — Product Review: Shady Rays X-Series

Long-road use: Full-coverage wrap for lake-loop sun and truck glare; Lost & Broken protection is the brand’s active-use pitch when a pair rides in a FlipBelt and eventually dies. Sport frame listed for running and high-impact outdoor work — not a boutique titanium story, a stay-put daily.
